Optical Illusion Weaving

August 21, 2010

4th graders loved creating these illusions. I demonstrated how to use the 3 primary colors to create secondary colors. We started with a 9 x 12 piece of white paper. They chose a primary color for the center and painted a circle the size of a quarter. They proceeded to paint around each circle with a different color. After letting them dry, iron flat if paper has curled. Hold paper like a tall building and fold in half. Use a ruler and make a 1″ line across top open edge. Now cut slits starting at the fold all the way to the marked line. Give students black strips of construction paper. Demonstrate how to weave over and under. Glue flaps at edges of paper down. Beautiful! Thanks to a teacher at artsonia.com for this fun idea.
