Roosters and Hens

September 9, 2010

Fifth graders kicked off the rodeo season by painting a farm scene with the main character of a hen or rooster.  After showing students pictures of roosters and hens from calendars and books like Big Fat Hen by Keith Baker and Barnyard Banter by Denise Fleming, we discussed characteristics of these farm animals.  I demonstrated how to fill up the page with sketches of their animal.  We brainstormed background scenes to include.  Students used pencil to sketch their scene and began adding watered down tempera paint for their background and grass/hay areas.   Encourage use of bright color and show how to add texture designs to wings.   To make the picture bold, they highlighted with either black sharpie or black tempera paint.
