Self Portraits

September 23, 2010

Kindergarteners and first graders were so funny when they painted self portraits….they wanted me to look into their eyes and tell them what color I saw, as if they didn’t already know!  We studied line to begin the year.  After demonstrating on the white board many types of lines, they were given an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of white paper and a tray of watercolor paint.  They used a variety of rainbow colors to paint different lines on their papers.  After they dried, I cut the paper to look like a shirt.  I glued a head and their shirt on a large 12 x 18 sheet of paper.  The next day, we talked about our facial features.  I demonstrated how to add eyes, a nose, lips, etc. and then they received a plate of tempera paint.  They were so proud of their creations and you have to admit, they’re pretty cute.
