Laurel Burch Cats

October 18, 2010

I’m thrilled to have discovered Laurel Burch.  Sadly, she passed away after a lifetime struggle against a terrible bone disease, but her gorgeous artwork lives on and can be found in gift shops around the country. With Halloween around the corner, I wanted students to create cats in the style of Burch…..colorful and full of fun lines and designs.  The kids were fascinated with her life story and intrigued that if given a choice between good health or creating art, she easily would have chosen her artwork.  I showed the kids many examples of her fabulous feline creations and they were excited to create their own.  Students started with a sheet of 12 x 18 manila paper and a black crayon.  After demonstrating several ways to draw a cat, they drew their own and added all sorts of neat features.  Even though oil pastels are very messy, the kids loved using them to create vibrant colored cats.  Aren’t these amazing pieces of art from 4th graders?
