Chalk Geometric Forms

November 19, 2010

One of the third graders remarked, “This is REALLY messy, but I like it!”   Students must know their geometric forms for the state test, so we decided to create some, hoping that the forms would become more of a reality in their minds.  For this lesson, we used spheres, cylinders and cones.  They traced patterns onto colored construction paper.  All students had to use white chalk and then choose two colors (a light and dark shade) that coordinated with their color choice of paper.  I demonstrated how to add dimension by shading with color.  They were very careful to blend their chalk with tissue paper and empty their powder residue in the trash.  They cut out their forms and glued them onto posters . They were very excited to show their teachers.
