Cardinals in the Snow

January 5, 2011

Christmastime is a great opportunity to pick up examples of cardinals.  You can find these bright colored birds on gift bags, wrapping paper, cups, etc.  After distributing photos and examples to groups of students, we discussed characteristics of this beautiful winter bird.  I demonstrated how to draw the basic oval body shape, then we added a circle for the head and topped it off with what the kids described as a mohawk.  We used white chalk to sketch our bird on red construction paper, then added additional color and details with oil pastels.  Just as expected, the fourth graders didn’t disappoint.  Thanks to deepspacesparkle.com for this idea.
