Zentangles

February 18, 2011

Who doesn’t love doodling?  I was introduced to zentangles at an art conference and brought the idea to third graders this week.  What are zentangles?  They are abstract doodles that begin with a simple line, that gradually builds with patterns and designs.  Creating zentangles is supposed to relax you and help you focus.  I downloaded examples from the internet so they could see the numerous ideas others have used on their zentangles.  I played some classical music and the kids began their designs.  I especially loved to hear their comments about each other’s work.  There are excellent videos on creating zentangles on youtube.com.
