Still Life

April 14, 2011

I got this idea from deepspacesparkle.com but adapted it for my third graders.  This is my second year to present this lesson and I’ve loved it each time.  Most kids have never painted a still life and they showed great enthusiasm for the project.  We began by looking at different examples of still life.  They created their own symmetrical bowl and using fruit templates, they traced them onto their paper, making sure they overlapped.  Some kids added detail to their background to look like wallpaper.  Students used oil pastel to add color to their table and background.  During session two, we brought out the tempera paint and began painting the bowl and fruit, shading, mixing colors and having a great time.  For the finale, they traced around the fruit and bowl with a black crayon.  I’m so proud of their finished products!
