Chalk Pastel Pumpkins

September 27, 2011

Fourth graders were up to their elbows in chalk dust after completing this fall project.  Several art blogs suggested using the technique of sketching a picture with white glue onto black construction paper.  We wanted to try this technique with pumpkins.  Children sketched a variety of pumpkins of all shapes and sizes in their sketchbook.  They used pencil to draw their favorite sketch onto black construction paper.  Very carefully, the students used a bottle of glue to outline their sketch.  Pictures were laid flat to dry overnight.  During the next session, they experimented with chalk pastel, adding several colors to each section of their picture.  They loved the look as they blended colors together.  These works of art are stunning!
