Blue Dog by George Rodrigue

February 23, 2012

I read Why Is Blue Dog Blue? by George Rodrigue to the kindergarten and first grade students.  They got a kick out of the book and were happy to find out that they would draw a dog….of course, they had to share all their dog stories first!  I gave them a 12″ x 18″ piece of white construction paper.  I modeled step by step how to draw a dog.  We used oil pastel and kids chose their favorite color for their dog.  On day two, we used an oil pastel and divided our background into six sections.  With an oil pastel, students added designs to each section….circles, zigzags, loops, checkerboard, etc.  They used a watercolor tray and added bright paint to each section.  These are adorable and they were happy to hear that the author will visit the Amarillo Museum of Art in August, 2012 and there will fun activities for the kids!
