A Symphony of Color

February 25, 2012

Since Carver Academy is a magnet school, kids have the opportunity to experience piano and choral music.  When I saw this art activity from Arts and Activities Magazine, October 2006, I knew I wanted to try it with our fourth graders.  This activity took most kids two sessions but some are still working on them.  Each received a 12 x 18 sheet of black construction paper.  They chose a musical instrument from a stack of pictures I downloaded from the internet.  Using white chalk, they sketched the instrument, making it oversized, added details and then divided their background into sections.  They used oil pastels to add color to each section.  Our music teachers commented on the accuracy of the instruments, which made the kids very proud!
