Fourth graders needed three class sessions to complete their birdhouse project.  Our school recently received a shipment of computers so I gathered all the boxes I could get my hands on and began the process of cutting them into useable pieces.  With Spring in full bloom, this birdhouse project was a new and fun activity for the kids.  We looked at lots of calendar pictures of beautiful birds.  We observed details about their appearance.  Each student received a small ball of clay and shaped a realistic bird.  Once fired, they painted them.  Next, students took box scraps and began cutting them up to create a birdhouse, adding oil pastels for color.  We glued it all together, adding brown Easter grass and were so pleased with their creations.
