Olympic Style Self Portraits

October 7, 2012

Second grade students always begin the art year by creating self portraits.  With the Olympic games generating such great interest with the kids, we modeled our portraits after the athletes who brought home medals.  We created t-shirts in the style of Jackson Pollock.  We taped a piece of paper to the inside of a box, applied dollops of red, white and blue paint to the paper and then rolled a marble through the paint making sure we created designs all over the paper.  Once dry, we cut the paper into a t-shirt shape.  We added a face to match our skin color and then students added details with paint and oil pastel.  All portraits hung in the main hallway of our school for several weeks.
